In the 1950s Mercedes-Benz it introduced a two-door luxury cruiser called the 300SL “Gullwing.” A Roadster followed a few years later, and since then we’ve seen a train of sleek, powerful convertibles that span six generations and almost 70 years. In 1989 Mercedes introduced the fourth-generation (R129). The top of the line 500SL, featured in Road & Track’s Sports & GT special issue from 1990, came with a new 322-hp, 5.0-liter V8.
