Last week you gave us all the details on your favorite cars to drive in 2020. This week, we’re starting off our 2021 planning right.
Our Question of the Week: What’s Your Automotive New Year’s Resolution?
Is this the year you finally fix the window regulator on your old project car? Or the year you put another 500 miles on it with one window down?
It’s time to start making a list of our 2021 resolutions. That way we can see how many we actually get to by the end of the year.
What are you looking forward to in the automotive world of 2021? Is it something specific, like finding a particular vehicle? Or is it something general, like wrenching more or going for a leisurely drive every Sunday? Let us know what you resolve to do in 2021!

I drive a lot of boring cars, being an automotive tech/shop manager at a general repair shop. This year I got to drive a 1974 Triumph TR-6 for the first time and it was a blast. The customer brought it in with the top down and I was tasked with driving it to verify the complaint of running too rich and assessing performance. It was a cool and sunny early summer morning and it could not have been more enjoyable. With the Monza exhaust it sounded great. Later on I drove it a bunch more as I worked on the Webers to fix the extreme rich condition.

Oh, that is an easy one. A pristine restored 1983 Dodge Mirada. Not a valuable car, but a very rare one these days, and gosh darned beautiful.
Both of my MK11 Cortina GT’s….It’s a sickness i’m told.Happy New Year everyone on BAT and the great staff.
For sure, although little occasion to drive it this year, my 2006 Jaguar XK8 coupe is my favorite. All the more delightful because I do so seldom get to enjoy it. Indeed, just seeing it parked in my garage is a joy.

Because I flew to Vancouver to check it out during the last week before shut down back in March… and then we bought it. Now we are terrorizing the streets of Los Angeles with all of the whopping 24.5 hp and need every one of them those horses … if they can be found and woken up …
I was fortunate to be able to drive what I consider polar opposites within a week of each other. A 2020 Porsche Taycan Turbo S, courtesy of Porsche, with its electric motors, two-speed automatic and all wheel drive, and a 1970 NSU TTS, courtesy of Joyaux Vintage, with its carbureted, air cooled 4-cylinder, 4-speed manual, and rear wheel drive. As fantastic as the 750 HP and instantaneous torque of the Taycan is, I’m giving the nod to the NSU from 50 years ago. The mechanical feel and sound and the lack of mass reminded me of what attracted me to cars in the first place. Cars today are great – fast, smooth, quiet, safe, but lack the involvement you experienced in driving the machines of the past.
My 17 yr old son’s ’97 Chevy Tahoe 2 Dr Sport, that we bought last year as his first car. Although it has often been an exhausting and expensive PITA, my son learned 3 valuable lessons right off the bat: 1) Try to resist impulse buys 2) Hope that you don’t impulse buy from a misrepresenting, lying sack of $&%# and 3) Understand that a 20+ yr old truck with 150K miles is gonna need lots of attention 😉 All that being said – we both absolutely love it! I’ve always been a fan of the style and feel of the GMT400’s. I’ve put quite a few miles on it myself this year, and really enjoyed it. The 4WD torsion bar front suspension and short wheel base combine to make a really nice driver. Certainly not a performance vehicle, but just has a stout, substantial, comfortable feel to it that makes it fun to drive!
The ’07 Impala the Redhead and I ran to Boise to surprise the youngest with this fall. Will never forget the look on his face when I walked him out to the lot and handed him the keys….peace on everyone’s 2021….s
Like so many, I didn’t get to do much driving in 2020 due to covid-19 restrictions. Way back in early January I managed a short drive in my “project” S4 Elan, which was fun more as a milestone than as an intrinsically interesting drive – the car was so far from being “right”.
Firstly, an honourable mention to a car that I didn’t drive, but had a memorable passenger ride in. A mate owns a (very) early 911S, which he has completely restored to as-new. It’s not fully fettled yet, but when he took me for a spin around the block I was blown away by how soft/smooth the ride is, and by the power. I can see why these are coveted cars.
Most of my 2020 driving was actually in my S2 Europa (upgraded with a Renault crossflow), which I used as my “daily” (really more weekly) during lockdown, and that was definitely my favourite car of 2020. Between the first and second lockdowns in my part of Australia, the local Lotus club organised a glorious early morning run on some great roads near Melbourne, and the Europa was magic. After five years of ownership, I’ve finally got everything pretty much dialed in, and the handling of a properly-sorted Europa is a revelation. Fingertip precise placement, instant response to throttle variations through the corner. And so small that you’ve always got plenty of roadwidth to create a good line.
For 2021? Hoping it will be a tight contest between the Elan, which I am determined to complete this year, and the Europa. Although I also need to drag my username namesake out of the shed and use it…
Without a doubt, my 1968 Hemi GTX. My eldest son and I finally finished an 18 year total restoration project late in the fall of 2019, to late to do much more than an initial engine break in run before preparing the car for winter storage. But for 2020, I was able to finally get some seat time and managed just over 500 miles of great fun. Still working out a few bugs which come with every full restoration project but nothing serious at this point. I have longed for the experience of driving a Hemi car (426 version) since I was 16 years old and saw my first Hemi powered Dodge Coronet RT. I can assure you I wasn’t disappointed. Now I’m just waiting for the Spring of 2021 and the fun shall continue and with any luck at all we should be able to see the revival of local car shows. Happy New Year to all BaT readers and I know we are all looking forward to a much better year in 2021.
