BaT Auction Success Story: Back Behind the Wheel in a 6-Speed BMW

This just in from BaT user Islandcar, who purchased this 2011 BMW 335i on the website in July 2020.

The story of how I came to own a 2011 BMW 335Xi isn’t too crazy but is one of necessity. I live in NYC, and prior to this pandemic I didn’t really need to own a car. I actually haven’t owned a car in over 15 years. Previously, my girlfriend and I used to take mass transit (a bus or train) out to our boat for the weekend, and with the associated risks of that type of travel, and a lot of time at home, I started searching for cars. I heard about BaT from a friend and would occasionally peruse the site for fun.

I was enamored with mid-2000’s M3 convertibles, and according to the auction results, so were many others…

After watching a few M3’s settle far out of reach, I decided to focus on 3-series BMWs with a manual transmission.

When I saw my eventual car listed it seemed too clean and too pretty to be true. My favorite color scheme, Deep Sea Blue Metallic with that (well-worn baseball glove) brown leather. This 2011 335Xi has beautiful lines, a turbocharged inline-6, a dual exhaust, and a 6-speed manual transmission?!

As I watched the auction all day every day, I thought there’s no reason this should fall to me at a reasonable price. Low and behold, I won the auction and took a train out of Grand Central that weekend to go pick up the newest addition to the fleet. My girlfriend and I were picked up at the train station by the seller and throughly shown around every detail of the car.

Yes, most people thought I was crazy to buy a car online, but I actually bought my boat on eBay, so making big purchases online is just another thing us weird millennials are comfortable with. Secondly, 1600Veloce is a great seller and I’d highly recommend doing business with them.

Since owning the car, we’ve driven over 6k miles to visit family and friends (outside and socially distanced of course!) We went to Maine for the first time ever and visited many coastal New England towns. I bought this car to rekindle the joy of driving a manual transmission. In today’s world of vehicles with lane-departure warnings and all the unnecessary bells and whistles that remove responsibility and forgive lack of concentration on behalf of the driver, I’m happy to be fully engaged while shifting and driving just for the fun of it. Who can look at their phone or a text when trying to perfectly time the shifts this beauty requires?

Above is a photo of my first taste of a manual-transmission, 3-series BMW… This was such a sweet ride to school! The author is on the left, older brother on the right.

Incredible update! A 335i with xDrive and a manual transmission is the perfect vehicle for breaking your 15-year, car-less streak! We think you made a great choice. With 6k miles added already, it sounds like you are really enjoying the ride. Well done.

Thanks for the story, and thanks to 1600veloce for listing this one with us!
