BaT Auction: 35k-Mile 1998 Mercedes-Benz SL500

This 1998 Mercedes-Benz SL500 is said to have been sold new at Plaza Motors in St. Louis, Missouri, and remained with its first owner until its acquisition by the selling dealer in 2020. It is finished in Brilliant Silver Metallic with a black soft top over black leather, and power comes from a 5.0-liter V8 backed by a five-speed automatic transmission. Equipment includes the SL1 Sport package, which included AMG styling elements and 18″ AMG wheels, along with a body-color removable hardtop, multi-contour and heated seats, xenon headlights, and automatic climate control. It now has under 35k miles, and service performed in preparation for the sale included an oil change, replacement of the hydraulic top cylinders in the windshield header, and replacement of the hardtop headliner. This R129 is now offered with partial service records, a Carfax report, and a clean Missouri title.

The car is finished in Brilliant Silver Metallic (744) with a black soft top and is equipped with the AMG styling package, which adds a unique front spoiler with mesh air dam, side skirts, an extended rear valence, and unique emblems. Additional equipment includes xenon headlights, front fog lights, and a removable body-color hardtop. The Carfax report shows damage occurring in October 2013 involving the left side and rear, and records indicate repairs were performed on the left side and rear in November 2013. The selling dealer states that they refinished the front bumper to correct flaws, and additional service included replacement of the upper locking hydraulic top cylinders and the hardtop headliner.

Staggered-width 18″ AMG Monoblock wheels wear Bridgestone Potenza tires measuring 245/40 in the front and 275/35 out back. The front wheel bearings were repacked in 2018.

The seats are upholstered in black leather with a matching dashboard, carpets, and door panels, while burl wood trim accents the doors and center console. Amenities include automatic climate control, a factory stereo with cassette and CD player, multi-contour and heated seats, and a sport package-specific shift knob. The ambient temperature sensor was reinstalled by the selling dealer, the left window regulator was repaired, and the left door latch was replaced.

The four-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel frames instruments including a 160-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 6k-rpm redline, along with a combination oil pressure, instant economy, and coolant temperature gauge. The digital odometer shows under 35k miles.

The 5.0-liter M119 V8 was rated from the factory at 315 horsepower and 345 lb-ft of torque. The hood insulation was replaced and an oil and filter change was performed in June 2020.
