BaT Auction: 31k-Mile 1971 Datsun 240Z

This 1971 Datsun 240Z was purchased new by a doctor in Los Angeles, who later sold it to the proprietor of Charland Auto in Burbank, and it was stored from 1981 through his passing in 2002. The car subsequently joined the Malamut Auto Museum, and the current owner acquired it from that collection in 2017. The car is finished in Monte Carlo Red over black vinyl and powered by a matching-numbers 2.4L inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Work performed during current ownership has consisted of installing steel wheels with early Series I covers, a cleaning and re-lining of the fuel tank, completion of a valve adjustment and replacement of the thermostat, brake booster, soft fuel hoses, and more. The car was displayed at the Quail in 2018 and won the FIVA preservation award. Now showing 31k miles, this 240Z is offered in California on behalf of the current owner with a copy of its 1971 title, early service records, receipts from the current owner, the FIVA trophy, and a clean Nevada title.

The unibody is finished in Monte Carlo Red (905) and wears white stripes on the lower bodywork. Series I cars feature horizontal hatch vents as well as 240Z badging on the sail panels, and this example is optioned with a vertically oriented rear defroster. The seller reports that a scratch on the right fender and paint chips on the right door were blended in. More than 45 paint-meter readings provided in the photo gallery below show thicker measurements in the aforementioned areas. The bumper guards were repaired and re-chromed in 2008.

The seat webbing was repaired in 2008, and the wood shift knob and the flasher relay were replaced during current ownership. The dealer-installed air-conditioning system was serviced and received a refrigerant recharge in 2017.
