BaT Auction: 1998 Ferrari F355 Spider 6-Speed

This 1998 Ferrari F355 Spider was first sold by Motor Imports Inc. of San Antonio, Texas, and it spent time in Florida before it was purchased by the late owner in May 2006 in Illinois and later moved to Wisconsin. The car is finished in Modena Yellow over a black leather interior, and power comes from a 3.5-liter DOHC V8 paired with a six-speed manual transaxle. Equipment includes a power-operated black convertible top, automatic climate control, and a Premier stereo with remote control. An engine-out belt service was performed in September 2019, and work performed since included replacing the exhaust manifolds, shock actuator, top bands, and tires. This F355 Spider shows under 31k miles and is now offered on behalf of its late owner’s estate with factory books, tools, a car cover, a top boot, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Wisconsin title.

The Pininfarina-designed body is finished in Giallo Modena (4305) features a power-operated black convertible soft top, a black top boot, integrated front fog lamps, and pop-up headlights. New engine lid struts were installed along with elastic soft top bands in October 2019. Stone chips on the front bumper, a crack above the front grille, and paint cracking on the driver-door airscoop are noted by the seller. Factory 18″ five-spoke wheels were refinished and mounted with new 225/40 front and 265/40 rear Bridgestone Potenza S-04 tires in October 2019. A new suspension actuator gear was installed in September 2020. Braking is handled by four-wheel discs with black calipers wearing white Ferrari script.

The power-adjustable seats are trimmed in black leather with a matching dashboard, door panels, and carpets. Amenities include drilled aluminum pedals, automatic climate control, a Premier stereo with remote control, a gated shifter, and Ferrari-branded floor mats. An air-conditioning system service was performed in September 2020 along with the installation of a new HVAC blend door. Sticky interior components are noted on the panel around the top and seat controls and driver’s door handle surround. The HVAC control panel is wavy, chips are noted on the ashtray lid, and the passenger-side leather airbag cover is wrinkled. The dye has worn off on the driver’s seat outer bolster.

The leather-wrapped steering wheel fronts a 200-mph speedometer and a tachometer with an 8,500-rpm redline along with gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature, fuel level, and oil temperature. The six-digit odometer shows just under 31k miles, 22k of which were added by the late owner.

The mid-mounted 3.5-liter DOHC V8 produced 375 horsepower and 268 lb-ft of torque when new. An October 2019 engine-out service performed by Motion Products Inc. of Neenah, Wisconsin, included new belts, filters, a thermostat, and catalytic converters.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transaxle. New exhaust manifolds were installed in September 2020.

Factory books and service records are included in the sale and can be seen up close in the gallery, along with a $24k invoice from September 2019, 2020 invoices totaling nearly $9k, and a letter from Motion Products Inc., who has maintained the car since May 2006.

The Carfax report shows history in Texas, Florida, Illinois, and Wisconsin from 1998 through April 2020 and lists no accidents or other damage.
