BaT Auction: 1986 BMW 325e 5-Speed Race Car at No Reserve

This 1986 BMW 325e sedan was acquired by the seller in 2002 and was subsequently modified to compete in the inaugural season of the National Auto Sport Association (NASA) Spec E30 racing series. Power is provided by a replacement 2.5-liter M20B25 inline-six paired with a Getrag 260 five-speed manual transmission and a 3.73:1 rear differential. The car underwent a refurbishment from 2017 to 2020, and is finished in white with M tri-color stripes over a race-prepped interior. Equipment includes 15″ Team Dynamics wheels, Ground Control coilovers, a roll cage, a Racetech seat, an AiM data logger and camera system, a Coolshirt System, a Lifeline fire suppression system, and more as detailed below. Work carried out in June 2020 consisted of rebuilding the engine and installed a replacement transmission. This E30 race car is now offered at no reserve with service records, spare parts and wheels, and an Arkansas bill of sale.

The seller states that the car was damaged during an off-track excursion at Virginia International Raceway in 2015. It was subsequently stripped, straightened, and refinished in Alpine White with M tri-color stripes by Bassen Autobody of Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 2017. Equipment includes front and rear spoilers, tow hooks, and a rain light.

15″ Team Dynamics wheels are finished in black and wrapped in 205/50 Toyo Proxes RR tires. The front and rear subframes have been refinished, and suspension modifications include front Ground Control coilovers, rear Bilstein shocks, and sway bars with custom pickup points. The foglight openings have been converted into brake cooling ducts, and a brake fluid flush was carried out in March 2020. Two additional sets of wheels and tires are included in the sale.

A custom roll cage was installed during the 2017 refurbishment, and additional equipment includes the following:

The replacement 2.5-liter M20B25 inline-six was rebuilt in 2014 by Burtonsville Performance and is equipped with Ireland rockers, 0.2mm-over forged pistons, ARP rod bolts, and CP-Carillo rings. The water pump, alternator, and radiator were replaced during the 2017 refurbishment. Service at Quantum Speed Works of Alton, Virginia in June 2020 included rebuilding the engine once more and fitting a new crankshaft. Addition service records are provided in the gallery below.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a replacement Getrag 260 five-speed manual transmission with a Clutch Masters FX400 clutch and a 3.73:1 rear differential. A custom exhaust system is fitted, and the driveshaft support center bearing was replaced in March 2020. The underside of the car was coated with POR-15 in 2017, and additional photos of the underbody can be viewed in the gallery.
