BaT Auction: 1981 Jeep CJ-8 Scrambler

This 1981 Jeep CJ-8 Scrambler was sold new from Miracle AMC-Jeep-Renault in Dallas, Texas, and resided in Texas and Oklahoma until 2014. The seller purchased it in Colorado in 2018 and has added approximately 3k miles since. The truck is finished in Jamaica Beige with two-tone vinyl graphics over a Nutmeg vinyl interior, and power is provided by a 4.2-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission and a dual-range transfer case. Equipment includes the SL trim package, a removable hardtop, a padded roll bar, wood bed rails, 5″ KC running lights, a swing-away rear tire carrier, a Weber carburetor, and an aftermarket vintage-look radio with auxiliary input. This CJ-8 Scrambler is now offered with a removed front brush guard, a set of running boards, a tan soft top, an owner’s manual, a Carfax report, and a Washington title in the seller’s name.

The body is finished in Jamaica Beige with two-tone Scrambler graphics and a textured brown hardtop. The SL package specified chrome wheels, grille trim, and bumpers, and additional equipment includes CJ-7 rear bumperettes, 5″ KC driving lights on the front bumper, factory wood bed top runners, a swing-away rear tire carrier, mesh taillight guards, and a padded roll bar. Chrome 15″ wheels are wrapped in 31×10.5″ BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A tires with 2016 date codes. Braking is handled by power-assisted front discs and rear drums, and the truck rides on leaf springs and solid axles front and rear. A tan removable soft top can be seen in the gallery and will accompany the truck, and the seller states that the rubber wheel-arch flares were replaced during current ownership.

The interior is trimmed in Nutmeg vinyl with matching carpets and door panels, a paint-matched dash panel, and black trim. The seller believes that the carpet was replaced during previous ownership, and the dash pad was replaced during current ownership. Equipment includes a locking center console, a vintage-look radio with auxiliary input, dash-mounted Sony speakers, a “bazooka”-style subwoofer behind the seats, and an under-dash air conditioning unit that is inoperable.

Instrumentation consists of an 85-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, an analog clock, and gauges for coolant temperature, fuel level, battery voltage, and oil pressure. The five-digit odometer shows 45k miles, approximately 3k of which were added by the seller since 2018. True mileage is unknown, and the seller notes that the clock does not work.

The 4.2-liter inline-six is fitted with a Weber carburetor, and the seller states that factory emissions equipment has been removed. Service during current ownership included an oil and filter change, a replacement valve cover and gasket, a replacement fuel filter, choke adjustments, and a replacement heater hose. The seller has provided photos of cylinder compression readings in the gallery.
