BaT Auction: 1979 Porsche 935 Track Experience w/ Bruce Canepa

As part of their annual fundraising gala, the Petersen Automotive Museum is offering the winning bidder of this auction a unique on-track experience in a 1979 Porsche 935 driven by Bruce Canepa. Equipped with a twin-turbo 3.0L flat-six that produces 700+ horsepower, the car in question was delivered new to Canepa after his motorsport success in the 1970s. The winner of the auction and a guest will both be able to ride with Canepa during exclusive hot laps in the 935 at Sonoma Raceway during the 2021 Sonoma Speed Festival. Two VIP tickets to the event, a meet and greet with Hans Stuck, and one of his helmets will also be provided to the auction winner.

Just 13 customer-delivered 935s were built by Porsche in 1979 before production ceased in order to make way for future prototype racing. Further 935 development was then left up to private teams such as Kremer and Joest. This example is the last “werks” car built by the factory and was reportedly allocated to Canepa after Porsche recognized his impressive accomplishments while driving the then-outdated 934.5.

Chassis 009 00029 was delivered just prior to the 11th round of the 1979 IMSA championship at Sears Point Raceway, where Canepa drove his new 935 to a 5th place finish. Canepa won a number of additional top-10 finishes during the 1979 and 1981 IMSA seasons before retiring the chassis after just five races. Because of its short-lived racing career, this 935 is considered to be one of the most original examples in existence today.

Tipping the scales at just over 2,100 pounds, the car is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0L flat-six delivering approximately 720 horsepower to the rear wheels. Composite bodywork is finished in white with black decals and features integrated headlamps, a front splitter, large rear wing, and wide fenders with engine air ducting. Center-lock BBS wheels feature black turbo-fan centers and are wrapped with full slick racing tires.

The ride along will include exclusive hot laps around Sonoma Raceway during the 2021 Sonoma Speed Festival, which is currently scheduled for May. The track was formally known as Sears Point Raceway and is one of the locations where Canepa drove this 935 in period. The winning bidder of this auction will receive two VIP tickets to the event, which include weekend hospitality and access to pit lane.

While at the Sonoma Speed Festival the winner will also get to meet Hans Stuck and will be gifted with one of his helmets.

Proceeds from the auction will go to benefit the Petersen Museum’s annual educational programs, restoration efforts, and strategic initiatives. The winning bidder will not drive the car, nor is the car up for sale. Footage of Canepa driving this 935 at the 2017 Rolex Motorsports Reunion at Laguna Seca is presented below.
