BaT Auction: 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am

This 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am was originally delivered to Shelton Pontiac-Buick of Rochester, Michigan and reportedly acquired by the seller in 2017 from its second owner of 38 years. Work performed during current ownership reportedly included rebuilding the 400ci L78 V8 and three-speed automatic transmission, as well as refurbishment of the suspension, fuel system, brakes, and more as outlined below. The car is finished in Buccaneer Red over white and factory equipment includes 15″ alloy wheels, removable T-top roof panels, a shaker hood, bucket seats, air conditioning, and a Delco 8-track player. This Trans Am is now offered with a factory build sheet, records from current ownership, T-top covers, a factory jack, and a clean Ohio title in the seller’s name.

The body is finished in Buccaneer Red (75) and features chrome window trim, a shaker hood with “Screaming Chicken” graphics, and Trans Am decals. Additional equipment includes removable T-top roof panels, front and rear spoilers, vented front fenders, and fog lights. Factory 15″ alloy wheels wear Westlake SU318 H/T tires that show date codes from 2014. The brake system was reportedly refreshed during current ownership with rebuilt front calipers and rear drums, as well as a replacement brake booster, lines, and wheel bearings. Additional work performed by the seller included refinishing the control arms, sway bars, and rear leaf springs, as well as replacing the ball joints, bushings, and shocks. Subframe connectors and cowl braces have been added, and a squeak is noted from the polyurethane leaf spring bushings when driving at lower speeds.

The cabin features white vinyl bucket seats with replacement foam along with red Deluxe trim on the door panels and dashboard. Matching replacement carpets have been installed, and amenities include power windows, a three-spoke steering wheel, air conditioning, and a Delco AM/FM stereo with an 8-track player.

An engine-turned dash panel houses instrumentation including a 100-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 5k-rpm redline. The five-digit odometer shows just under 30k miles, approximately 200 of which have been added by the seller.

The Z-code 400ci L78 V8 is reportedly equipped with aftermarket high-compression pistons, an Edelbrock intake manifold, an Edelbrock 650-cfm carburetor, and a dual exhaust system. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Turbo 350 three-speed automatic transmission and an Eaton TruTrac 3.23:1 limited-slip differential with Moser 30-spline axles. The engine, transmission, and differential are said to have been rebuilt by the seller following a repaint of the engine bay and subframe. The driveshaft was refinished, balanced, and fitted with replacement u-joints, and additional work reportedly included replacement of the following components:

  • Exhaust manifolds
  • Fuel tank and lines
  • A/C evaporator, compressor, and receiver/drier
  • Heater core
  • Torque converter
  • Transmission cooler and lines
