BaT Auction: 1976 BMW 2002

This 1976 BMW 2002 is finished in Fjord Blue Metallic over blue vinyl and powered by a 2.0-liter inline-four paired with a four-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. Equipment includes 14″ basketweave alloy wheels, a short shift kit, PerTronix electronic ignition, a Weber carburetor, a Tii-spec exhaust manifold, and an Ansa exhaust system. The was reportedly first sold in California, and later spent time in Florida before being acquired by the seller in May 2018. Subsequent work included fitting European-specification chrome bumpers, rewiring the starter, and replacement of the starter, brake booster, battery, distributor, plug wires, center link, tires, floor mats, and weather striping and gaskets. This 2002 is now offered with removed spare parts, service records, handwritten ownership notes, and a clean Tennessee title in the seller’s name.

During prior ownership the car was refinished in Fjord Blue Metallic, and the seller fitted chrome-finished European-specification bumpers. Additional service included replacement of the windshield gasket, the trunk lid weatherstripping, wiper blades, and turn signal lenses. The seller notes overspray is visible, and scuffs, dings, corrosion, and scratches are shown in close-up in the gallery below.

Basketweave 14″ alloy wheels sourced from a newer BMW wear 185/60 Barum Brillantis 2 tires, which the seller states were mounted during their ownership. The seller also reports that he replaced the center link and brake booster, while the rear brake linings, rear wheel cylinders, and brake fluid reservoir were reportedly replaced during prior ownership.

The interior features seats trimmed in blue vinyl, along with matching carpets and door panels and a black dashboard pad. Equipment includes a Pioneer cassette stereo and an AutoSolutions short shifter. Noted flaws include a stain on the headliner, “puffy” sun visors, a tear in the driver’s seat upholstery, and the air-conditioning system does not work.

Instrumentation includes a 120-mph speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, and a five-digit odometer showing just over 91k miles. The seller has reportedly driven 1k miles and replaced the odometer gears. Total mileage is unknown.

The 2.0-liter M10 inline-four is said to be fitted with a Weber carburetor, a Tii-spec exhaust manifold, and PerTronix electronic ignition. The seller reportedly replaced the starter, battery, spark plug wires, and distributor. Maintenance performed by the prior owner is said to have included repair of vacuum leaks and a rebuild of the carburetor.

The sale includes two spare wheels, a jack, a wheel center cap removal tool, a lug nut wrench, and weatherstripping for the trunk lid as well as the removed stock bumpers, Solex carburetor, shifter assembly, and air filter housing.
