BaT Auction: 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SL

This 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SL is finished in Medium Blue with a blue soft top over red leather, and it is powered by a fuel-injected 2.8L inline-six paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. Equipment includes a removable body-color Pagoda hardtop, power steering, a Hirschmann power antenna, a rear Kinder seat, Kangol three-point seat belts, a refurbished Becker Europa AM/FM radio with an auxiliary jack, and a Frigiking air-conditioning system. The car was ordered as a high-school graduation present for its first owner, who took delivery of the car in Germany with her mother. It was acquired by the seller in 2015, after which the interior and hardtop were refurbished. Additional recent service is said to include replacement of the air-conditioning compressor, motor mounts, shift bushings, and rear trailing arm pads. This W113 is now offered with delivery and maintenance records, owner’s and workshop manuals, and a clean Louisiana title in the seller’s name.

The seller states that the car was refinished in its factory Medium Blue (350) in 2002, and the blue soft top is a replacement component. Equipment includes a Hirschmann power antenna, tinted glass, and polished dual exhaust outlets. The seller notes that the bumperettes were removed during prior ownership and not included in the sale, and a replacement locking gas cap is fitted. The seller also states that the front fender notches were not preserved during refinishing, paint touch-ups are noted on the edge of the hood, and pitting is visible on the left side of the trunk floor.

Factory 14″ steel wheels wear full covers with body-color centers and Goodyear Integrity tires showing a mix of date codes. During prior ownership the shocks and brake components were replaced, and service during current ownership is said to include replacement of the rear trailing arm rubber pads. Fluid seepage is noted from the power steering gearbox.

The car was ordered with red leather upholstery (243) from the factory, and the seats are said to have been refurbished during current ownership with replacement spring bases, rubberized horsehair pads, and leather seat covers. Matching carpet and sunvisors were installed, and the side-facing rear Kinder seat was reupholstered in leather. Amenities include Kangol three-point seat belts, a refurbished Becker Europa AM/FM radio with an auxiliary jack, and Frigiking air-conditioning system with a Buds Benz rotary compressor that was installed by the seller.

The steering wheel features a separate horn ring and frames a 140-mph speedometer and a tachometer, along with gauges for fuel level, oil pressure, and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows under 62k miles, approximately 2k of which were added by the seller. Total mileage is unknown.

The body-color Pagoda hardtop is said to have been refurbished with a replacement headliner, rubber seals, and wood trim. The seller notes one grab handle is missing.

During prior ownership the radiator and engine mounts were reportedly replaced, and an oil change was performed in March 2020. Identification stampings presented in the gallery below correspond with the engine number indicated on the factory data card.
