BaT Auction: 1959 Porsche 356A 1600S Cabriolet

This 1959 Porsche 356A cabriolet is finished in Ivory over a red leather interior and is powered by a numbers-matching 1600S air-cooled flat-four paired with a four-speed manual transaxle. The car was completed in June 1959 and reportedly resided with three owners in California before the seller purchased it in 2008. Subsequent refurbishment work included a repaint, replacement upholstery, a replacement black convertible top, and a rebuilt transaxle. Additional equipment includes a black top boot, a luggage rack, chrome hubcaps with colored Porsche crests, a Blaupunkt radio, an accessory handheld lamp, and an optional auxiliary anti-theft device under the instrument panel. This 356A cabriolet is now offered with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, a copy of the Kardex, refurbishment photos and records, a driver’s manual, a tool kit, a spare parts kit, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.

The Reutter-built body was refinished in its factory Ivory (5704) in 2011. Equipment includes a black convertible soft top, a black top boot, an optional luggage rack finished in metallic silver, and chrome bumper overriders. The dual exhaust tips exit through the rear bumper guards, and the seller states that the convertible top was replaced during the refurbishment completed in 2013.

15″ ventilated steel wheels are finished in silver and wear chrome hubcaps with colored Porsche crests as well as 165-series Michelin XZX tires. Braking is handled by four-wheel hydraulic drums, and the convertible top is pictured in both its raised and lowered positions in the gallery.

The interior was re-trimmed during the refurbishment completed in 2013 and features bucket seats upholstered in red leather, matching door panels, beige square-weave carpets, and a red dash pad. Equipment includes black lap belts, a black floor mat, a Blaupunkt radio with two loudspeakers, and a removable accessory hand lamp. An optional under-dash anti-theft device remains fitted, and a VDO clock was added to the dash during current ownership.

The ivory steering wheel frames VDO green-letter instrumentation consisting of a 6k-rpm tachometer, a 120-mph speedometer, and gauges for oil temperature and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows approximately 1,600 miles. True mileage is unknown.

The 1.6-liter Super flat-four is equipped with dual Zenith downdraft carburetors and was factory rated at 74 horsepower. The oil was changed in 2020.
