BaT Auction: 1958 Porsche 356A 1600 Engine

This 1.6-liter Type 616/1 flat-four was originally produced in 1957 for use in a 1958 Porsche 356A. It was reportedly rebuilt during previous ownership and was recently removed from a 1957 VW Beetle that was acquired by the seller on BaT in June 2020. A fuel pump, distributor, and generator are included in the sale along with a clutch assembly, exhaust components, engine tin, and two Zenith downdraft carburetors. This Porsche flat-four is now offered out of West Falmouth, Massachusetts.

1958 Porsche 356A 1600 Engine

The Type 616/1 flat-four displaces 1,582cc with a bore of 82.5mm and a stroke of 74mm. It features a three-piece aluminum crankcase, single camshaft, and pushrod valvetrain. This example was reportedly overhauled during previous ownership with 912 connecting rods and camshaft lifters, as well as new rod and main bearings. According to the seller, approximately 2k miles have been added since.

Two Zenith 32 NDIX carburetors are retained and topped with factory air cleaners. A Precision Matters aluminum sump plate and magnetic drain plug were fitted by the seller, and additional equipment includes a Bosch distributor, mechanical fuel pump, sport exhaust system, clutch, flywheel, and generator.
