With strictly limited numbers, there’s only one fair way to decide
Honda Australia has announced it will hold a lottery to decide which of its customers will get the chance to own a Civic Type R Limited Edition, the “purest expression of Civic Type R to date.”
An allocation of just 20 vehicles will hit the local market and, of those, one will remain in Honda’s custody for promotional duties. The remaining 19 vehicles will be offered to the public.
Announced for Australia in February, the special edition Civic Type R will feature lightweight 20-inch BBS alloy wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres, changes to dampers and steering, and stripped out sound-deadening in the roof, tailgate, dashboard and front bumper.
An exclusive Sunlight Yellow II paint finish and contrasting gloss black painted roof, mirror caps and bonnet intake vent, mark the Limited Edition Type R as something special at a glance.
Power remains unchanged, with the same 228kW and 400Nm outputs from the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder as the regular Type R.
In order to provide a level playing field for all customers, and keeping in mind the coronavirus restrictions limiting the movements of Victorian customers, the company has deemed a lottery system the fairest way of allocating the available purchase slots.
Honda claims more than 700 people have expressed interest in the new model, and while that’s no assurance of 700 potential sales (were enough stock available), it shows plenty of interest in the Type R Limited Edition.
While registering your interest isn’t a prerequisite to participate in the lottery (and the previous link has been taken down), those who have already registered their details will be contacted directly with an invitation to participate in the lottery.
“With an extremely small number of Civic Type R Limited Editions available for our market, we wanted to present an equal opportunity for all customers keen to purchase one of these cars, irrespective of their location, dealership access or internet connection,” said Honda Australia director, Stephen Collins.
“We believe the lottery competition will give all Type R fans in Australia an equal chance to purchase one of these special models, while building the suspense in the way only a lottery draw can.”
Production of the Limited Edition model has been capped at 1020 units globally.
In terms of pricing, the regular Civic Type R lobs at $54,990 plus on-road costs, but the Type R Limited Edition carries national drive-away pricing of $70,000.
Those who wish to participate in the allocation lottery have from October 1st until October 31, 2020 to register, with the draw to be conducted in November (draw date not provided).
Entries can be completed at a dealer or, for Victorian customers, through the Honda Australia Contact Centre (details here). The 19 selected buyers will then have the opportunity to progress with their order – once a $5000 deposit has been paid.
Vehicle delivery is expected in April-June 2021
