The M18 was unveiled at the 1971 (British) Racing Car Show, built to contest the third season of Formula 5000, to continue the impresive results of the M10 and possibly secure the hat trick of British F5000 Championships for McLaren. It was based on the M10 which in turn had been based on the M7A Formula One car and was very different to the new McLaren M19 F1 car and the M16 Indy car. Driven by Brian Redman the car proved to have lost the edge on rivals Lola and Surtess

Was sold to Howden Ganley for the UK series, with Tim Schenken driving when Ganleys BRM F1 commitments clashed. It was also driven during its first season by Jean-Pierre Jassaud. In 1972 it was driven by Ray Calcutt and Tony Lanfranchi. Subsequent drivers include Tony Trimmer, future Indy winner Arie Luyendijk and Boy Hayje
