The Ital was launched. July 1980, under the model code ADO 73 taking its name from the Italian Design studio, who had been commissioned ltancy role, by BL to re-engineer the Morris Marina., but did not take a direct role in the refreshed design which was handled in house under Harris Mann

Launched on 1st July 1980, with a revised exterior, the car retained the Marina's 1275cc A series and 1695cc O series engines, driving the rear wheels. From October 1980 a 2.0 litre Automatic version became available.

In 1981 all models received an upgraded interior and in 1982 the 2.0ltr. was made available in L and HL trim levels.

Production of the Ital began at Cowley (1980-82) before moving to Longbridge for 1982-84, the Ital was also produced in Setubal, Portugal. Portugese built cars retaining the Marina name, and all were powered by the aged 1.5 litre B Series Diesel engine.

At the end of production tooling was sold to Chengdu Autoworks, China. In 1998, the Ital estate (utilising a locally-made chassis) reappeared there, under the name Huandu CAC6430. Van and pick-up variants were also produced. Chengdu Auto Works is thought to have closed down in May 1999.

The Ital ceased production in 1984, this car was registered in 1985 by which time only the Metro van was still wearing the Morris badge, which effectively makes this one of the last Morris registered passenger vehicles
